A separate National Federation of Independent Business survey found that nearly one-quarter of surveyed small employers were using AI technologies in 2025.

Rather than combining statistics from different surveys into a single adoption number, this StartupWerx guide examines what current research tells us about how businesses are using AI, where adoption differs by business size, which business functions are using AI, and what small-business owners report getting from the technology.

Last reviewed: September 2026

Data note: AI adoption statistics are particularly sensitive to survey wording, business population and timing. The NFIB Small Business and Technology Survey was conducted among small employers drawn from NFIB’s membership database.

That difference matters when comparing the results.

How Many Small Businesses Use AI?

There is no single percentage that accurately describes AI adoption across every U.S. small business.

One reason is that surveys measure different populations.

Another is that the definition of “using AI” has changed as AI tools have become embedded in ordinary business software.

What the Census Bureau Found

The Census Bureau’s 2026 AI supplement to the Business Trends and Outlook Survey provides one of the strongest current measurements of AI adoption among U.S. employer businesses.

During the November 2025 through January 2026 reference period:

18% of firms reported using AI in a business function.

When weighted by employment rather than simply counting firms:

32% of employment was associated with AI-using firms.

Census researchers also reported that AI adoption was expected to reach:

22% of firms within six months.

This research covers employer businesses rather than the entire universe of U.S. small businesses, which also includes millions of nonemployer businesses.

That distinction is important when interpreting the percentage.

Why You May See Different AI Adoption Numbers

Search online for the percentage of businesses using AI and you may encounter dramatically different answers.

That doesn’t necessarily mean one survey is wrong.

The surveys may be asking different questions or measuring different groups of businesses.

The Census Bureau provides an important example.

Earlier versions of the Business Trends and Outlook Survey asked whether businesses used AI in producing goods or services.

Beginning in November 2025, Census revised the wording to ask businesses whether they were using AI in any business function.

That broader definition can capture activities such as:

Writing and communications

Marketing

Customer service

Finance

Human resources

Information technology

Research and development

Business strategy

It better reflects the way many businesses now encounter AI.

A company might not consider AI part of the product or service it sells while still using AI to write marketing material, analyze documents, answer customer questions or assist employees.

StartupWerx AI Adoption Rule

When evaluating an AI adoption statistic, ask four questions:

Who was surveyed?

What counted as AI use?

When was the survey conducted?

Was the statistic measuring businesses, employees or AI users?

If those variables differ, two percentages generally should not be presented as though they measure the same thing.

Business AI Adoption Reached About 20% in 2026

Census’s high-frequency Business Trends and Outlook Survey provides a more recent look at adoption.

From December 2025 through May 2026, overall reported AI use among U.S. employer businesses generally ranged between:

17% and 20%.

Expected AI use over the following six months ranged between:

20% and 23%.

For the survey period ending May 3, 2026, the national AI-use estimate was:

19.8%.

These figures reflect the revised Census definition that asks about AI use in any business function.

AI Adoption Varies Significantly by Business Size

Business size is one of the clearest differences in AI adoption.

For the Census collection period ending May 3, 2026:

37% of firms with at least 250 employees reported using AI.

32% of firms with 100–249 employees reported using AI.

Less than 20% of firms with four or fewer employees reported using AI.

Between December 2025 and May 2026, Census also found that AI use increased among firms with at least 20 employees but did not change significantly among firms with fewer than 20 employees.

The data show that AI adoption is not occurring at the same rate across business sizes.

Larger businesses may have more:

Technology staff

Training resources

Capital

Data

Defined processes

Internal expertise

Opportunities to deploy AI across multiple departments

For a small business, the question may be less about adopting AI everywhere and more about identifying a few tasks where automation or AI assistance produces measurable value.

Which Industries Use AI the Most?

AI adoption also differs substantially by industry.

As of May 3, 2026, Census reported:

Industry

AI Use

Information

39.7%

Finance and Insurance

33.9%

All employer businesses

19.8%

Retail Trade

About 14%

Knowledge-intensive industries reported higher AI use than many sectors where a larger share of work requires physical activity, equipment or in-person service.

This matters when comparing your business with national AI adoption rates.

A neighborhood landscaping company should not necessarily evaluate its AI maturity against a software company.

The more useful comparison is often with businesses performing similar work.

What Are Businesses Using AI For?

Census’s 2026 AI research provides a detailed look at where adopting firms are deploying AI.

Among businesses using AI, the most common business functions included:

Business Function

Share of AI-Adopting Firms

Sales and Marketing

52%

Strategy and necessarily broad across the entire company.

57% of AI-using firms integrated AI into three or fewer business functions.

This suggests that adoption often begins with targeted applications rather than company-wide transformation.

For small businesses, that can be a practical model.

Instead of asking:

“How do we become an AI company?”

A better starting question may be:

“Which repetitive, expensive or time-consuming business process would benefit most from AI?”

How Are Small Businesses Using AI?

The 2025 NFIB Small Business and Technology Survey provides a small-employer perspective.

NFIB found that:

24% of surveyed small employers currently used AI technologies for business activity.

Among respondents reporting current or planned AI use, applications included:

Business Activity

Share Reporting Use or Planned Use

Communications

29%

Marketing / such as email, memos and documents.

The prominence of communications and marketing makes sense for smaller businesses.

These activities often consume substantial owner or employee time while requiring relatively little technical infrastructure to begin using generative AI.

The NFIB results should be interpreted within the survey’s population: small employers drawn from NFIB’s membership rather than all U.S. small businesses.

Do Small Businesses Think AI Will Become More Important?

NFIB’s survey suggests many small employers expect AI’s importance to increase.

At the time of the survey:

42% of respondents considered AI important to some degree in their industry.

Looking five years ahead:

63% expected AI to be important to some degree in their industry.

When asked specifically about operating their own business:

56% expected AI to be important to some degree within five years.

Expectations also varied by business size.

Among businesses with 1–9 employees, 37% considered AI important to some degree in their industry at the time of the survey, compared with 69% of businesses with 50 or more employees.

Is AI Increasing Small-Business Productivity?

Some small-business owners report productivity improvements, although survey results should not be interpreted as proof that AI caused the improvement.

Among AI-using respondents in NFIB’s 2025 survey:

30% reported increased productivity

23% reported improved product or service quality

8% reported lower operating costs

5% reported increased revenue

4% reported increased sales

These are self-reported outcomes from surveyed business owners.

They do not establish that every small business adopting AI should expect the same result.

The figures are more useful as evidence of where some businesses believe AI is creating value.

Is AI Replacing Small-Business Employees?

Current survey evidence does not indicate widespread immediate headcount reductions among businesses using AI.

In the NFIB survey:

98% of AI-using small employers reported no change in employee count associated with AI use.

Census’s 2026 AI research similarly found AI-related employment decreases to be uncommon among the employer firms it studied.

Only:

2% of firms reported AI-related employment decreases.

Census researchers also found:

66% of AI users relied on AI solely to augment tasks.

That means AI was being used to assist work rather than fully substitute for the tasks being performed.

AI can affect work without eliminating a job.

For example, an employee might use AI to:

Draft a customer email

Summarize a document

Research information

Create an initial marketing draft

Analyze customer feedback

Generate ideas

Assist with repetitive administrative work

The employee remains responsible for the broader job while AI reduces or changes the work required for individual tasks.

These findings describe current survey evidence. They should not be interpreted as predictions about AI’s longer-term effects on employment.

Workers May Be Using AI Even When the Business Hasn’t Formally Adopted It

AI adoption can occur from the top down or the bottom up.

Census researchers found AI being used for work-related tasks in:

23% of firms.

On an employment-weighted basis, the figure was:

41%.

Writing, document analysis and information search were among the leading generative-AI worker tasks.

The researchers also found evidence of both bottom-up and top-down adoption: worker task use sometimes occurred without formal firm-level adoption, while firm-level adoption sometimes occurred without worker task use.

This creates an important management issue for small businesses.

Employees may begin using publicly available AI tools before the company has created a formal AI strategy.

That can introduce questions involving:

Confidential business information

Customer data

Intellectual property

Accuracy

Human review

Approved software

Access controls

Compliance

A small business doesn’t necessarily need a large corporate AI-governance program.

But it should understand where AI is being used and establish appropriate rules for sensitive information and human review.

AI Adoption Is Often Narrow Rather Than Company-Wide

One of the more revealing findings from Census’s 2026 research is that most AI adopters aren’t deploying AI everywhere.

Among AI-using firms:

57% used AI in three or fewer business functions.

Similarly:

65% limited generative-AI worker use to three or fewer tasks.

This suggests a practical approach for small businesses.

Start with a clearly defined business problem.

Examples might include:

Too much time answering repetitive inquiries

Slow lead follow-up

Manual document processing

Repetitive data entry

Creating marketing drafts

Summarizing meetings

Categorizing customer requests

Producing first drafts of proposals

Reviewing large amounts of information

Then determine whether AI is actually the appropriate solution.

Not every automation requires AI.

Traditional rules, software integrations and workflow automation can sometimes solve the problem more reliably and inexpensively.

The StartupWerx Small-Business AI Adoption Framework

The statistics suggest that useful AI adoption does not require deploying AI throughout the company.

StartupWerx recommends evaluating AI opportunities through five questions.

1. What Business Problem Are You Solving?

Start with the process, not the AI tool.

Identify where the business is losing:

Time

Money

Leads

Customer responsiveness

Employee capacity

2. Can the Process Be Automated Without AI?

Deterministic automation is often preferable when the rules are objective.

AI becomes more useful when the process requires interpretation, classification, summarization, generation or other forms of judgment.

3. What Happens if the AI Is Wrong?

The higher the consequence of an incorrect output, the stronger the human review and control requirements should be.

4. How Will You Measure the Result?

Useful measures might include:

Hours saved

Response time

Cost per transaction

Leads processed

Conversion rate

Error rate

Customer satisfaction

Revenue influenced

5. Should You Expand?

If a small deployment produces measurable value, expand it.

If it doesn’t, fix the process or stop using it.

The goal isn’t maximum AI adoption.

The goal is measurable business improvement.

What AI Statistics Mean for Someone Starting a Business

AI has reduced the time and effort required for some activities that historically required additional labor, specialized software or outside services.

That can be particularly important for a new business with limited resources.

A founder may be able to use AI assistance for:

Market research

Business planning

Content drafts

Marketing

Customer communications

Data analysis

Administrative tasks

Workflow automation

But AI does not eliminate the fundamentals of starting a viable business.

A new business still needs:

A customer

A problem worth solving

A viable business model

Appropriate pricing

Startup capital

Required licenses and permits

A legal business structure

Financial controls

A customer-acquisition strategy

AI can make some of those activities easier.

It cannot substitute for the underlying economics of the business.

Ready to Turn Your Business Idea Into a Business?

AI can help you research, plan and operate more efficiently. class="wp-block-heading">What percentage of small businesses use AI in 2026?

There isn’t one universal percentage because surveys use different definitions and business populations.

Census’s nationally representative survey of U.S. employer businesses found overall AI use generally between 17% and 20% from December 2025 through May 2026.

A separate NFIB survey conducted in March 2025 found that 24% of surveyed small employers used AI technologies for business activities.

The percentages should not be treated as directly interchangeable.

What percentage of businesses currently use AI?

For the Census BTOS period ending May 3, 2026, approximately 19.8% of U.S. employer businesses reported using AI in a business function.

Usage varied substantially by company size and industry.

Are large businesses more likely to use AI?

Census data show higher AI adoption among larger employer firms during the period examined.

For the Census survey period ending May 3, 2026, 37% of firms with at least 250 employees reported using AI, compared with less than 20% of firms with four or fewer employees.

What do small businesses use AI for?

NFIB survey respondents reported using or planning to use AI for activities including communications, marketing and advertising, business analysis, customer service, accounting, process automation and cybersecurity.

Communications and marketing were the most frequently reported applications.

What business function uses AI the most?

Census’s 2026 AI research found sales and marketing was the most common function among AI-adopting firms, reported by 52%.

Strategy and business development followed at 45%, with information technology at 41%.

Does AI increase productivity for small businesses?

Some owners report that it does.

In NFIB’s 2025 survey, 30% of AI-using respondents reported increased productivity.

That is a self-reported survey outcome and should not be interpreted as proof that AI adoption automatically increases productivity.

Is AI replacing small-business employees?

The available survey evidence indicates immediate headcount reductions were uncommon among the businesses surveyed.

NFIB reported that 98% of surveyed small-employer AI users experienced no change in employee count associated with AI.

Census’s 2026 research found AI-related employment decreases in 2% of firms in its employer-business population.

These figures describe the survey periods studied and are not forecasts of AI’s long-term employment effects.

Will AI become more important for small businesses?

In NFIB’s 2025 survey, 56% of surveyed small employers expected AI to be important to some degree in operating their own business within five years.

Should every small business use AI?

Not necessarily.

AI should solve a defined business problem or improve a measurable process.

Some business problems are better solved with conventional software, workflow automation or changes to the underlying process.

Sources and Methodology

StartupWerx built this guide primarily from U.S. Census Bureau research and a clearly identified small-employer survey from the National Federation of Independent Business.

Primary 6 through March 31, 2025.

A total of 521 respondents completed the survey.

NFIB describes the report’s population as small employers—small businesses with at least one employee.

Because this population and methodology differ from the Census BTOS, StartupWerx does not combine the NFIB and Census results into a single AI-adoption rate.

StartupWerx Methodology

When comparing AI statistics, StartupWerx distinguishes among:

Survey population — employer businesses, small employers, business owners or workers.

Definition of AI use
